The 'Museums in the Long Now' roundtable organised by City University arose from an assumption voiced at a recent Museums Association Conference that museums will continue to exist in their present 150-year old form for the foreseeable future, with government continuing to provide most of the funding and the public (domestic and foreign) continuing to visit them in significant numbers. But in a world of rapid social, political, demographic, environmental and technological change is that assumption realistic?
The purpose of this round-table was to bring together a number of people who will challenge the 'more of the same' assumption from various perspectives. The objective was to develop a number of alternative scenarios which could help museums to respond more positively to change.
