Groundbreaking Doctoral Training Centre

In 2009, QMUL launched an £8 million Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded, Doctoral Training Centre, focusing on Media and Arts Technologies (M.A.T).  This innovative interdisciplinary training programme focuses on the the science and technology which is transforming the creative sector.  Its mission is to produce post-graduates who combine world-class technical and creative skills with a unique vision of how digital technology transforms creative possibilities and social economies.

QMI assisted in the development of the initial EPSRC bid, drawing on our expertise in both the creative and technology based industries in addition to negotiating with industrial partners and securing their support.

QMI also provided advice on developing the interdisciplinary aspects of the programme across the university and its networks, along with guidance on branding, marketing and raising profile.

The Centre’s pool of strategic industrial partners covers a broad and diverse cross section and includes BT, NESTA, QinetiQ, TATE, LCACE and the Technology Strategy Board.  As well as working in collaboration with PhD Researchers, partners will contribute directly to the development of the Centre through its participation in its advisory board.

The Centre has already attracted extraordinary attention from the creative industries, both within East London, Europe’s creative heartland, and on national and international platforms.  QMI has continued to support the Centre to strengthen industrial networks and set the foundations for long-term relationships between the strategic partners and QMUL.
