Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution and a vibrant centre of academic excellence, which is recognised internationally as Britain’s top specialist in the provision of research-led education for mature students. Birkbeck has an outstanding reputation for the excellence of its research: 75% of the research returned in the field of History of Arts, Architecture and design was classified as 4* and 3* or of international significance. Although a new department which has not returned a research assessment yet, the department of Media and Cultural Studies has already achieved an excellent reputation and has seen its number of students significantly increase during the academic year 2009-2010.
