A special free preview event in conjunction with the Barclays Cheltenham Jazz Festival will take place at King’s College London featuring Dr. Harvey G. Cohen who will be exploring the life and career of Duke Ellington through rare audio clips from Ellington himself. Few artists in any medium have enjoyed the lasting international impact of Duke Ellington. Dr. Cohen will discuss why Ellington should be viewed as an important figure in American history, not just American music. The event will be on Monday, 26 April 2010 from 7pm to 8pm at King’s College London on the Strand. The event will feature a lively discussion between Dr. Harvey G. Cohen, who authored the soon to be released book Duke Ellington’s America (University of Chicago Press, 2010), and Alyn Shipton, an award-winning author and broadcaster, who is the jazz critic for The Times in London, and the presenter/ producer of Jazz Library for BBC Radio 3. Advance copies of the book will be for sale on site; its UK release date is 15 June 2010.
Dr. Harvey G. Cohen is a cultural and political historian who teaches at King's College London in the Centre for Culture, Media and Creative Industries Research. His highly anticipated book Duke Ellington’s America is a thorough and nuanced portrait of the towering figure many believe to be America’s greatest composer:
“Duke Ellington''s America is the most detailed and probing examination of Ellington's later career…Cohen has produced a book that does justice to the complexity and importance of Duke Ellington's life."-Burton Peretti, author of Lift Every Voice: The History of African American Music
“An excellent piece of cultural history, grounded in fantastic sources, including Duke Ellington’s papers and scrapbooks, and interviews with his players and other jazzmen, a treasure trove that future scholars will mine for decades.”- Lewis Erenberg, author of Swingin’ the Dream: Big Band Jazz and the Rebirth of American Culture
