Led by Richard Martin and Lucy Scholes
Combining film and psychoanalytic theory, this six-week course will explore the fascinating relationship between fantasy and cinema. Honing in on Stanley Kubrick's - adapted from Arthur Schnitzler's novella , which in turn can be traced back to Freud's - the course will consider how successfully cinema has depicted the dynamics of desire. Classes will begin with a short introductory lecture on the main themes of the week, with activity-based class discussion forming the majority of each session. The course will also include a visit to the Stanley Kubrick Archive at The University of the Arts London.
Richard Martin is an AHRC-funded doctoral student at the London Consortium, researching the role of architecture in the films of David Lynch. He was the co-organiser of the recent Birkbeck conference, 'Crossing the Boundaries: A Conference on Interdisciplinarity and Research', and is currently organising an international symposium on David Lynch, due to take place at Tate Modern in October 2009. He is also a freelance writer and tutor.
Lucy Scholes is a part-time PhD student at Birkbeck, University of London, writing her thesis on sibling relationships in twentieth-century literature and psychoanalytic theory. As well as teaching, Lucy also works as a freelance editor and journalist.
